secrets. Everyone has secrets that they are too afraid to share with the world. Thus my work is about revealing those secrets in a way that the secret is never actually revealed. Part of our fear as humans with secrets is the fear of being judged by people for the things that we hide. Keeping secrets can be a burdensome task, so my work is about the feeling of letting go and setting secrets free. By using the language of codes, I can incorporate my secrets into my art without the risk of people being able to read them. I use codes like Binary, Morse code, and Bar codes to mask my secrets. After the secret in converted into a code, I further mask the secret with different methods of installation so that it is practically impossible to decode. I mask my secrets to protect myself against judgment from others, but the full secret is still out in the open, available for everyone to see.
honesty. I strive to be an honest person in today’s society. I believe that people should treat people the way they want to be treated, a concept we all learned in Kindergarten. That being said, I don’t like being lied to so I try my best not to lie to those around me, treating them the way I would like to be treated myself. Instead of lying to people about what I have to hide, I create pieces based off of the secrets I have, but they secrets are muddled in a way that they are indecipherable. My secret is technically out in the open, but I don’t have to worry about being judged for it because I make sure that no one will be able to actually read it.
textiles. I have been enamored with textiles since I was a little girl. I am always amazed that, with textiles, the yarn from a skein can be physically manipulated into something and then be taken apart and rolled back into the skein from which it started. A textile, to me, is a very honest material. Since honesty is important to me in my work, the materials from which I make my work should be honest as well. I don’t like to hide things, and working with textiles allows me to do so.
color. Color can represent so much just in being itself. I tend to make work that is mono-chromatic or with very few colors because that gives a major sense of unity to the piece. I feel like one color gives a sense of solidarity and lets the viewer know that every piece of this work of art has something to do with each other piece.
